As early as the late nineteenth century, the term Scientific Temper was defined as:
“A modest open-minded temper, ever ready to welcome new light, new knowledge, new experiments, even when their results are unfavourable to preconceived opinions and long-cherished theories.”
More than a century later, this idea remains as relevant as ever.
Scientific Temper is characterised by curiosity, intellectual honesty, and an openness to new knowledge. It encourages us to critically examine claims, question assumptions, and follow the best available evidence.
The first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru popularised the term and developed it into a guiding principle for society. Scientific Temper connects the values of the Enlightenment with the methods of modern science. This mindset transcends political, cultural and ideological boundaries, creating a common foundation for knowledge, progress and dialogue.
Our Vision
We envisage a world in which scientific thinking, critical inquiry and evidence-based decision-making become part of everyday culture.
A world where young people learn not only scientific facts but also how to distinguish reliable knowledge from misinformation, pseudoscience and wishful thinking.
A world in which disagreements are addressed through reasoned argument, an openness to evidence, and a collective pursuit of truth.
Our Mission
Scientific Temper promotes science, critical thinking and evidence-based education worldwide.
We support individuals and organisations that share these values and work to strengthen public understanding of science, rational inquiry and human progress.
Our activities focus on four interconnected areas:
1. Science and Critical Thinking
Promoting scientific literacy, critical reasoning and public engagement through publications, events and educational initiatives.
2. Education
Supporting the development of science-based educational resources and learning opportunities for children and adults.
3. Environment and Human Well-Being
Encouraging evidence-based approaches to environmental sustainability while supporting human development and prosperity.
4. Global Educational Support
Partnering with schools and educational projects that foster scientific curiosity, critical thinking and equal opportunities for young people.
Our Approach
We believe that societies flourish when questions are welcomed, doubt has its place and ideas can be examined openly.
For this reason, Scientific Temper works with educational institutions, schools, scientists, science communicators, humanist organisations and other partners who share a commitment to reason, evidence and open inquiry.
We strengthen scientific thinking where it can have the greatest long-term impact: in education, through international cooperation and practical educational projects. We view our efforts as a complement to and a support for existing initiatives that promote science, Enlightenment values, and critical thinking.
